Vinny Lingham’s Blog

FindWhat Article

Another article just published in FindWhat (update - link broken).
I have been hectically busy. We have been putting together quite a few deals this week, but, obviously, I can’t say until we have finalised them. I’m off to Johannesburg tomorrow for the Business Day TT100 Awards on Monday where we are a finalist. These awards are for the Top 100 Technology Companies in South Africa. Myself, Charlene & Mandy (our PR Manager) will be in attendance! Wish us luck!

More to come!

White Faces & Burnt Wings

If you’ve been following my blogs, you would have noticed by now that I have somewhat of an electric personality.  Why?  Well, for the 2nd time in a month, my plane gets hit by lightning, not once this time, but twice - on both wings!!!  You want to know what that looks like?  I don’t actually know, myself and all other 200 passengers had our eyes closed for the rest of the flight! No seriously, the lightning burnt the wings black - it’s pretty scary seeing bright lights and hearing big bangs - something like Guy Fawkes, just at 25,000 feet in the air!

What a nightmare trip to Johannesburg - I woke up at 4:30am, fetched Eric, made it on time for my flghts (6:30am), only to sit on the runaway for 45 minutes, while they unsuccessfully tried to fix a malfunctioning fuel pump.  Eventually, they return to the terminal where we disembark and have breakfast.   We then reboard another flight at 9:10, again - flight delayed for another 30 minutes.  When we eventually take off, the weather has gotten worse…now I’m sitting in the plane - listening to lightning blasts - thinking to myself - maybe I should have just stayed in bed!

Anyways, enough b*tching.  I don’t really have anything in mind to write about - just wanted to write what could be potentially have been or could be my last blog!!

Karma & Chess

In many ways, Karma is like Chess. If you make too many wrong moves, you can lose the game, but more importantly, you can make just one wrong move, and it’s all over. For those who have no clue what I’m talking about - Karma is the Hindu version of relativity (for each action, there is an equal reaction), so if you do good, good will come to you and if you do harm… you get the picture.

Karma does not only apply to people, it applies to companies aswell, more importantly, companies in the Internet world. You need to take time to think and strategize and consider your opponents move, way before they have even made the decision to make it. So, in essence, companies tend to make decisions and create “actions” which lead to consequences. I know this is abstract, please bear with me and read between the lines.

Microsoft (get the picture), has made far to many mistakes in the search engine arena, and are paying the price. No one in their right mind would count them out of the game, not by a long shot, but the questions really is : Can they usurp Google?

With Google’s most new release of the Desktop Search, they have firmly thrown the gauntlet smack-bang into Microsoft’s face. What will the behemoth do to counter this move? What they always do! As everyone knows, they’re building search into Longhorn (their new operating system) and will attempt to do to Google with search, what they did to Netscape with the browser. However, rumour has it that Google is busy building an internet web browser - in my opinion, a bold, but BRILLIANT move.

The Internet is hotting up and it’s getting back to bubble days, or is it? My view on the Internet at the moment is that we are finally living up to the dreams of the dot-bomb days. All the visions and ideas were not practically possible then, but they are now - it’s taken 4 years…and it’s clear to see what the advancements have been in terms of infrastructure - Google, Overture & FindWhat have made customers easier to find and because of that, companies now have a sustainable way of growing their businesses, using the Internet as a marketing channel.

Where am I hiding?

Actually, I’ve been pretty busy this week writing articles - so where are they?

Well, they’re being published by some newsletters and sites, so I can’t publish them here until they are published externally - hopefully next week.

For those of you have not seen Google Desktop Search - WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN? This is probably the most incredible application I have ever seen! In the words of Andrew Smit (our employee number 4 at incuBeta - “This is the next killer Ap!). I must agree with him wholeheartedly.

I have been using Lookout’s software (part of Microsoft) for a few months - it’s similar to Copernic, but the Google has pretty much forced me to uninstall it - their search tool is so much better!!

Download it and try it. It pretty much turns your PC into a Google Server - I have over 55,000 items indexed and it takes a millisecond to find anything! Simply amazing!!!

What’s New on Gadget Boy’s Desk?:

I have a cool pair of Sennheiser Wireless Headphones - I can walk through the office listening to my iPod, while it’s sitting on my desk. Very cool for watching TV at home while Charlene is studying! They’re pretty long range aswell and it works through thin walls.

I also just bought a Kenwood Smoothie machine and an LG Refridgerator - now I can store my fresh fruit and yoghurt in the fridge and make smoothies in my office (my doctor thinks that I should lay off the drugs).

Anyways, expect at least 3 posts next week!
