I’m very proud to be able to announce that during what looks like the deepest economic crisis of recent history, SynthaSite’s investors are so confident of our success, that they have increased their investment by a further $20m (R200m). This is testament to the great work that our team have done in building a solid business with a great product. We have also grown our userbase to over 1m from just over 10,000 at the start of last year and we are poised for more radical growth this year.

Even though the world economy is not looking good, the fundamentals of our business remain the same : People everywhere will need websites, today, tomorrow and in 5 years time – when this depression is over! The funny thing is that our business is partially recession-proof, in that as people get retrenched, they start their own small businesses, and therefore need websites.

SynthaSite’s goal is to make it easy enough that anyone with a computer can create a website for their small business, organization or personal needs. We’re building a long term business here – we want to be the undisputed market leader, and this investment goes a long way to getting us there.

The first $5m that we received allowed us to hire 40+ people, create infrastructure, systems, process & support for our business to expand upon. We are now ready to take our product to various large ISP’s & PC Manufacturers and increasing our reach and distribution by getting our product into the mass market. We believe that this $20m investment will allow us to grow very quickly and become the de-facto standard amongst for small business & personal website building.

On a side note, when we first raised the $5m and I moved to San Francisco – I came under criticism from some local South African observers for moving abroad. Today, SynthaSite has created over 20 jobs in Cape Town and we moved 5 of us from Cape Town to San Francisco – this is job creation at it’s best for South Africa. (Thanks to Nic for his blog post today). I’m very proudly still South African and I’m glad to be able to contribute to the local economy and demonstrate what’s possible if you put your mind to it, make sacrifices and keep trying!

And guess what: I’m not alone… guys like Justin Stanford are also out there making things happen in Cape Town, and if this trend continues, Cape Town in particular is going to become the Silicon Cape that I dream of!

TechCrunch gave us some good coverage today and explains a bit about what’s we’re up to – worth a read!

Thanks to everyone for their support thus far – the future certainly looks bright for SynthaSite!

We’ve just released a major new upgrade of SynthaSite’s Site Builder, which we believe is a substantial improvement over the previous version. At SynthaSite, usability is a key focus, and we recently hired a Director of User Experience and a User Interaction Designer – most startups will not focus this much on usability – which I personally do not agree with. When building web applications, one of the most important things to remember is that average Internet user does not have the patience to go through the learning curve of your product – you need to make it as easy as possible, with as few steps as possible to achieve what your solution offers.

We spent many months this past year trying to figure out how to improve our offering to the average Internet user. We conducted live, in-person usability tests, to outsourced ones with usertesting.com. We a team of guys from MIT conduct usability testing with the man on the street. We also contracted in the guys over at Momentum Design Labs in San Francisco, including Brad Damphousse who did some excellent work for us, much of which is being released today.

I urge you to try out our latest version – all feedback is greatly appreciated. Our official press release follows:

SynthaSite Launches New User Interface Making it Easier for Everyday Internet Users to Create Free Professional Quality Web Sites

More than 70 Percent of Small Businesses Don’t Have a Presence Online; SynthaSite Breaks Barrier Offering Web Site Builder for All

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF., — July 10, 2008 — In today’s Internet age, having a presence online is standard, if not critical. SynthaSite, the leading do-it-yourself free Web site builder, today released a newly enhanced user interface that makes it easier for everyday Internet users and small businesses to leverage the reach of the Internet and create a professional quality Web site quickly, easily and for free.

SynthaSite’s Web site builder is an intuitive tool that allows anyone, regardless of technical know-how, to create and publish a Web site with ease. Using the What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get (WYSIWYG) system, SynthaSite’s offering facilitates the design process by displaying a user’s content during the creation and editing process similarly to how it will appear when published. With SynthaSite’s drag and drop technology, users can easily incorporate a variety of widgets including Flickr streams, YouTube videos, Google Gadgets, Genbook online appointment booking and many more. Users also get free sub-domains and hosting for their sites. Web sites created on SynthaSite are universally compatible across operating systems, as well as browsers such as Internet Explorer and Mozilla.

The new user interface announced today is designed to make it even quicker, easier and more intuitive for anyone wanting to build a Web site. Highlights of the new user interface include:

    * One Click to Begin: By streamlining the process for signing up, Web site creators can now start building and editing their Web site with just one click
* Increased Creation Space: The newly enhanced Site Builder incorporates more horizontal space, offering Web site builders more room for their creations to take shape
* Simplified Key Functions: Key functions such as the saving and publishing process, as well as the site manager page, have been simplified making the experience of creating a Web site more streamlined
* Friendly Look and Feel: The new user interface is friendly and intuitive, making Web site creation easy and fun

“The Internet is a powerful tool that, unfortunately, most people are not utilizing to its fullest potential. More than 70 percent of small business alone don’t have a presence online,” said Vinny Lingham, CEO and founder of SynthaSite. “At SynthaSite, we see ourselves as the onramp to the Internet for the everyday user; now, anyone who can access the Internet can have a professional-looking, personalized Web site.”

What Everyday Users Are Saying

“I created a site for my 88-year old mother with a guestbook where anyone can post their picture and write to her,” said Shirley Hodges from Rosebud, Texas, http://www.rosebudmercantile.com/grammyscorner/. “When she logs on to check on her site and read all the guestbook entries, she gets a grin on her face as big as Texas! I’m encouraging everyone I meet to check out the site and write to her; it’s something she looks forward to daily.”

“I am a retiree and teach an introduction to website building class at a private school that serves many senior retirement communities,” explained Ralph Thomas, a SynthaSite user from Summerfield, Fla. “During my four-hour class, I help my students develop and leave with a published website they can continue to improve on their own.SynthaSite offers the tool and opportunity to publish at no cost which is very beneficial to our students.”

“I just found SynthaSite and I love it! I’ve already created two photography websites and I’m impressed with how they’ve turned out,” said Brandon Baumgarten from South Lake Tahoe, Calif., http://www.flowskigallery.com and http://www.flowskipix.com/. “It was so easy to make; I was able to plug in the URL of any individual photo gallery at either of my SmugMug accounts and it made a wonderful slide show on the SynthaSite page featuring my photos.”

So, here’s something that I thought was really cool! The tech team at SynthaSite have mashed up Picnik & SynthaSite in the latest update of SynthaSite.

Instead of creating an entire photo editor, it was far simpler to use Picnik’s API’s and embed the web application into SynthaSite. This is a great example of how web applications make integration with each other so much easier through the use of web services.

In addition, Synthasite now also allows you to use your own domain name with your websites (instead of mysite.synthasite.com)! There is a lot more to come, stay tuned…!

Synthasite announced this morning, that it will be giving away 1,000,000 free shares in Synthasite (Pty) Ltd to it’s community. As far as we are aware (and correct me if I’m wrong), we’re the first Web 2.0 company that has ever offered to give away free shares to it’s web community in exchange for helping to build the business. I’ve often thought that early adopters for startups should share in the successes of the companies that they support. I know how much I would have liked to be given free shares early on in Yahoo, Google, YouTube, Digg and other such companies, when they were still fledgling. Well, luckily, I can now deliver to our users, what I’ve always wanted to receive. In the true spirit of Web 2.0, we want to empower our community and make them feel like stakeholders in the business, with all the upside.

Synthasite aims to build a very strong and devoted community over the next few months and years, and to that end, we will be releasing free shares for certain development projects that the community can assist us with, in today’s example, Template Design, but in future, it will include stuff like language translations, component development, activity in the forums, etc.

Please help spread the word to designers out there – this is a milestone for us, and with the upcoming Beta, you can play a part in building out our template library, and see your templates used by thousands of people (and get free links back to your site, in addition to the free shares!).

Update:Â Synthasite’s share offer just got featured on TechCrunch

In keeping with Synthasite’s explosive Alpha launch, we decided to coincide the launch of our Beta with Guy Fawkes Day (5th of November)! Since the Alpha launch, we’ve been inundated with both end user & partner enquiries, and we thank everyone for all their feedback and support! We signed up over 6,000 users in less than 2 months and we’re now moving into a very exciting growth phase of the business, and we will be focused on a number of things in the Beta, including achieving some measure of scalability, as well as what you’ve all been waiting for…

So, what are the top 3 major features that will be released in the Beta?

1) The ability to publish your Synthasite created website on a subdomain of Synthasite.com (xyz.synthasite.com) with free hosting
2) You will be able to download your website, and host it on your own domain and server (and edit the PHP code if you so choose)
3) Multiple website templates for use in publishing

What’s after Beta?

We have a great roadmap ahead, but our focus is to release the Beta, which is a major milestone, with the core architecture that will allow us to quickly add new features in the weeks and months that follow! Thanks again to everyone for their support!

I’m proud to announce that Synthasite has finally gone live today (as promised!), into Alpha. Remember, this is basically a technology teaser, which will indicate more about what we are doing, but we are still a long way off! Comments, feedback and reviews are most appreciated – please blog about it, tell your friends & spread the news – Synthasite is now live!! We’re limiting accounts right now to the first 1500 users, hurry and get yours now, even if are only going to play with it later!

Please feel free to distribute the following press release:

  For Immediate Release:

Synthasite, an AJAX based Web Publishing Platform, emerged today from stealth mode. The 6-person startup based in Cape Town, South Africa was recently spun out from the incuBeta group as a separate stand-alone company that will focus on delivering a world class web based software platform for web publishing, focusing specifically on Widgets & Mashups. Synthasite looks and feels like desktop software, but remains firmly rooted in the browser with no reliance on client side technology.

Synthasite CEO, Vinny Lingham (Founder of a leading Search Engine Marketing company, incuBeta), said the following: “Synthasite’s Alpha [Tech Preview] release today was a milestone in the company’s aim to become the standard for web publishing. We’re releasing it at this early stage in order to allow the community to assist in the direction that we will take Synthasite and we are very excited about the potential for this space, especially with the rapid rise of Mashups & Widgets. Synthasite ushers in a new era for web publishing; where people construct using existing building blocks, rather than build everything from scratch, and publish collaboratively from any machine rather than being stuck on a single PC or OS. We’re very excited about rapidly releasing many of the features on our extensive roadmap. We’re opening the Synthasite framework to the developer community so that they can build their own components and templates, and we will also be enabling source code level editing – although this will only be available in the Beta released, scheduled for Q4.”

Synthasite is also being tested on Amazon’s Elastic Compute Cloud, which in theory allows it to be infinitely scalable, although accounts will initially be limited.

Synthasite is currently being seed funded by Lingham Capital, incuBeta & Miombo Capital, all South African based investment firms.

Update: 5 June

Less than 1000 accounts left! Here is a quick video of the Synthasite Alpha Release:
