Internet Memory & Marketing

I found something really funny! I just clicked a Google Adwords contextual ad, reading about recent tension in the world, blah blah. Well, the ad I clicked on was for NostradamusOnline.com, and I thought I would check it out at least.

Very interesting piece on the homepage:

From the Author:

“I’m afraid the making of World War III is actually taking place in front of our eyes.” Prince Hassan of Jordan - March 26, 2004

Drawing on newly discovered Nostradamus manuscripts, a startling new view of the world is revealed. If you agree that signs like widespread terrorism, a volatile Middle East, and an economic depression could lead to World War III - then you will find this book truly eye-opening.

With a total of eight chapters, The Nostradamus Code: World War III opens with an overview of the bewildering events currently unfolding on the world stage. You will find out why they are happening, and what you can do about them to protect yourself.

Next, the years 2007 through 2012 are explained in precise detail. Referred to by Nostradamus as the Time of Troubles, this period is full of war, despair, and evil, but also of hope and promise. Use this book to enlighten yourself, your loved ones, your world, and your future.

Now, skepticism aside, being the Internet marketer that I am - I knew that this page was compelling - almost too compelling, so I checked out a good old favourite - the WayBack Machine for the history of Nostradamus Online
. I’ll save you the visit - basically, every year, the date in question moves closer to 2012 (2005 to 2006 to 2007) :-) - this probably means that none of the stuff in 2005 or 2006 came true (nope, I haven’t read the book!).

It’s great marketing, for the next 5 years anyways (or until the 2012 cutoff moves forward for Version 2.0!).

There’s a lot of this stupid stuff on the net, as well as in the “real” world.

Probably this Nostradamus, and magicians, and witches, and so on… are more dangerous online, for a well-done site has more possibilities to catch the attention (…and the money) of “easy” people.

Ya this is exaaaaactly what the world needs: another hype-stir about the impending WWIII and the terrorist attacks that are on the way… How many people are reading The Nostradamus Code thinking it’s non-fiction? Obviously, a story about the future is fictitious, but somehow I doubt that the people who buy and read this book have made that cognitive leap. It may be good reading but let’s hope it doesn’t move from string-betting-marketing-con to self-fulfilling prophecy.
