I’ve just added a top commenters plugin to this blog, to encourage more comments. The top commenters will receive a link back to their blog from VinnyLingham.com with their names (my homepage is a PageRank 6), and I have removed NoFollow tags across the entire blog, so you will get linking credit for it! Happy commenting (and again, please add value in your comments, and don’t try to spam the system)!

Very well done. The “Top commenters” is a very useful plugin, and it really brings a lot of new commenters - and visitors - to the blog.

Did this really increase the number of comments on your blog? I did not try it until now, because I’m not convinced it makes people comment more. Or does it?
March 29, 2007 at 3:37 pm
Actually - it appears that it does. Also, Chris - the URL is triggered by the URL you first used when you posted a comment. I can change it for you.

@Vinny: I agree with you.
I saw the same effect on some italian-language blogs I normally read which installed the plugin.

Hi Vinny,
I was just searching for information on this ‘top commenters’ plugin when I found your blog. (So it does work!)
I think it’s a great idea, making it a little easier for bloggers to build a network in their subject field, providing useful feedback for fellow bloggers whilst getting some credit for this. These days it seems you have to be a problogger or paying, to be listed in blogrolls, and nofollow links does not make linkbuilding and promotion any easier.
Good move,
Michelle.

It’s a great ideea. Since I enabled do-follow on my site, I noticed an increase of over 50% in comments. I don’t mind that at all

What a pity you removed this useful plugin!
April 10, 2007 at 9:40 pm
Yeah, I know. It wasn’t working properly! I’ll try to find the latest version, but I remove it for now. All comments still have the no-follow tag removed, so people will still get link credit.

So how come you removed the plugin? I just installed mine. I also removed the nofollow from comments/trackbacks.

I actually removed it because people were making short and meaningless comments in order to get ranked

Its a great way to increase comments volume, but only in case of high page rank of blog.

Vinny,
Where did you find the plugin? It looks like you’ve removed it all together - did the meaningless comments outweigh the extra participation?
