World Wide Web Application Conference in Cape Town

World Wide Web Application Conference in Cape Town

I’ll be speaking on the future of web applications at this year’s 10th annual WWW Application Conference in Cape Town (at my alma mater - UCT) today.

I’ll be posting my presentation on this blog post later this weekend using SlideShare - so watch out for it.

I’ve taken one of my most popular blogs posts on web apps and turned it into a slide presentation - this should be a fun talk!

Update: 9/11/08 - Here is the presentation:

Fundamental Shifts in Software

I was at the conference - and was a great talk. Your analysis of the economics of the s/ware market is on the button. Thanks Vinny. Great stuff!!
The Q&A session was too short - but in response to the Q from somebody about web-based apps exacerbating the digital divide: My take is that this is actually what developing countries need. SA is going to have a bandwidth boom as we move towards 2010 and beyond - and as such I foresee the role of web-based apps being a facilitator in leapfrogging the digital divide….. no more reliance on multinationals for donated software for poor communities .. and no more do donor agencies have to worry about the licences, and upkeep of software in community centres…..+++

    Regards
    Shaun

    Hi,

I was at the conference and enjoyed the presentation you gave. I had a question but didn't ask at even though we were given an opportunity to.
What is different about http://g.ho.st/ (which I signed on to a few months ago) to your product?
Related to this is (based on your other business expertise, with search keyword optimization being the core of it) - why would similar people to me not find and use GHOST instead of SynthaSite.

You are describing your product as an alternative to compiled applications and GHOST is described as the Global Hosted Operating System.

I'm sure I'll find out once I compare the two - but I'm interested in your comparison.

with all the technology available at conferences these days, who does one speak to in order to get a podcast or a video of the talk you gave at UCT?

Hi Preggy - sorry for the delay in responding (been travelling like crazy). GHOST is more like Windows or Linux. SynthaSite is merely an application, it does not require GHOST, but it does require a browser - check out Ghost and SynthaSite and you will see the distinct difference.
